	A magnificent pair of Wedgwood black basalt Sphinxes. These are the Greek form of the mythical beast, with a pharaonic head, wings and the lower body of a lion, inspired by images on black- figure vases. The modeller was either Thomas Boot, or Josiah Wedgwood himself. L: 6". c.1800-1820 Marks: impressed Wedgwood Ref: Reilly and Savage, A Dictionary of Wedgwood, pg. 323 and 324. The Greek spinx was derived from the Egyptian version via Mesopotamia, and this form was first seen in Corinth, c.800 B.C.
