Antique English Wedgwood pottery A magnificent pair of Wedgwood black basalt Sphinxes. These are the Greek form of the mythical beast, with a pharaonic head, wings and the lower body of a lion, inspired by images on black- figure vases. The modeller was either Thomas Boot, or Josiah Wedgwood himself.

The Greek spinx was derived from the Egyptian version via Mesopotamia, and this form was first seen in Corinth, c.800 B.C.
